when doing this, always specify a /24 netmask (255.255.255.0 or
FFFFFF00).  i think there's some silly code in ifconfig or if_net that
automatically guesses the netmask for a inet_addr based on legacy
"classful" addressing.

10.0.0.0.255 up "
