thanks for the reply.  however, i'm still having a problem.  i wish i had
noted what partiton was what.   i tried a-c but none worked... i didn't
know there was a g partition.  i wish i'd tried tha tbefore i started the
reinstall.

typically what partition is used for boot?  the root or the usr?
