Is that necessary or desirable?

Setting the RTC to the system clock would only be necessary
if the system clock were more accurate than the RTC chip.
This is exceedingly unlikely and if the system has been in ddb
(or lost any clock ticks elsewhere) definitely untrue.

It might even be advantageous to lock the system time to the
RTC during normal operation - if not using NTP.
