Hi all,

seeing all the correspondance about NVRAM problems, I thought I'd share my experience.

I recently picked up a few SS2s from work, all with dead NVRAM. After some searching, I found that I could get two free DS1642-70nS NVRAM chips for them from MAXIM.

These chips worked like a charm in my SS2s - no problems of any kind. There are reports of these chips causing trouble in several Sun models, including the SS2's, in the sun-nvram-hostid FAQ, however these problems are reported with the 100 or 150 nS versions.

MAXIM bought out Dallas semiconductors (who made the DS1642) a little while ago, and they have a great policy of providing two free samples of almost anything they produce. I received my NVRAM chips, in Australia, about 4 days after ordering from MAXIM online.

Goto http://www.maxim-ic.com/ , search for part# DS1642, then scroll down to 'request samples' at the bottom.
