i can't give you much help, but i do have this working on my classic:

nell0 at sbus0 slot 1 offset 0x0 level 4 (ipl 7) level 7 (ipl 13): rev 1
pcmcia0 at nell0 socket 0
wi0 at pcmcia0 function 0: INTERSIL, HFA384x/IEEE, Version 01.02
wi0:wi0: command timed out, cmd=0x0
wi0: init failed
 802.11 address 00:02:6f:01:c9:25
wi0: using RF:PRISM2.5 MAC:ISL3873B(PCMCIA)
wi0: Intersil Firmware: Primary (1.0.7), Station (1.3.6)
wi0: supported rates: 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 5.5Mbps, 11Mbps
pcmcia1 at nell0 socket 1

the "init failed" timeout appears harmless and a patch has gone into wi.c
since that kernel was built to increase the timeout value anyway.

i have not got it working with hostAP mode yet, but this kernel is a couple
of weeks old at this point, and many more fixes have gone into -current
since then anyway. are you using 1.6? it should work there i believe,
but not as a "hostap", but it's possible a newer version of -current is
broken on sparc :)
