Where did you get the files from?

From a quick look at
	ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.6/sparc/installation/floppy/
I see:
	-r--r--r--  1 234  netbsd   872156 Sep  9 02:44 disk1.gz
	-r--r--r--  1 234  netbsd  1345888 Sep  9 02:44 disk2

I assume you're gunzipping disk1.gz before writing it to the first floppy?

(Whilst disk2 actually contains gzipped info, it shouldn't be gunzipped).
