I've used APC smart UPSs for years with netbsd and solaris.
There is a funny cable, but all the UPSs I've had came with
said cable.

As for s/w I use my own http://www.crufty.net/sjg/apcmon.html
which handles just about everything an APC smart UPS can do
and is just a shell script - so works on any *nix. I've used
it on everything from a sun386i - Ultra 3000 as well as netbsd.

It handles a group of machines one one UPS via syslog :-)

My current UPS is a 1400VA model I think - runs about 6 machines
quite happily.
