That's usually an nvram thing. I believe the correct options are 'setenv input-device' and 'setenv output-device' - 'ttya' locks you to the serial port, 'keyboard'/'screen' for the keyboard / frame-buffer.

Not sure why auto-detect wouldn't work if those two are unset though...
