It's been a while, but if you set "ats1=1" and then "at&w" the modem
will auto-answer, and I think if you're using all the right modem
control stuff, open() on the serial port will block until you get
carrier, so you can just use /etc/ttys?

The last time I set up dialin I used sliplogin, which worked
pretty much out of the box after I read the man page. I don't know
how pppd works though.
