Damn.  I've just wasted time building on an SS2 to test this, and came to=
 the=20
exact same conclusion.  It's requesting AFMT_U8, but the ioctl for /dev/s=
ound=20
is saying that only AFMT_MU_LAW is supported, hence it dies.

Confirmation of the fact is always useful though :)
