I tried some of the tricks there, and it's still a no-go. The monitor's
LED is "amber" which either means out of range or no signal.

According to that FAQ, the model cgthree that I have only supports
1152x900@66, which my monitor should definitely support.

Well, if I can't get this working, I may have to invest in a new monitor.
We'll see :) Besides, do the TGX or TGX+ even to better than 8bpp in
NetBSD?
