Change the console line in /etc/ttys:

    console "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure

The default console line is for screen/keyboard console, not for
serial console.

This obviously depends on the size of your minicom window.  E.g. I
cu(1) to my javastaion serial console from a vertically maximized
xterm (that happens to be 51x80) and so when I log in I do:

    stty rows 51 cols 80; LINES=51; COLUMNS=80
