ummm, it appears to basically be some raster type device.  all the
processing is done on the host side -- this part isn't an issue,
there are already ghostscript drivers and so forth that run under
solaris that we can use...

   Okay that was my original intention.  If it does that then I'm
   happy.  It's going to be connected to a HP LJ4 btw.  It's just
   cheaper for me to do this than it is to buy a print server and/
   or jet direct card.  I also have the advantage of sticking
   ghostscript and some postscript generator perl modules on it
   for doing nice-looking automated reports ;)


i recommend looking at the magicfilter package.
