Well, there is an alternative: You try to get a cable 13W3 -> BNC and
a monitor with BNC inputs. This more or less excludes all (at least
most of) the devices which are not capable of 1152x900x76
Hz. The cable costs about te same as the adapter.

Note that is nearly impossible to switch to a lower resolution, say
1152x900x66 Hz when PC monitors are attached --- i tried the
instructions in the framebuffer FAQ using cg3 and cg6 graphics without
success.
