ok, got the BETA installed on my Classic X.  excellent.  took some screwing
around, but i finally got it right.  so i'm going to try and save this failing
disk that i had noticed with the list's help. so:

uhm, say what?  i tried this twice, same thing happens both times.  i haven't
reboot the machine yet, it's still at the ok prompt, but the last time this
happened to completely trashed /var to the point that the fsck -y i did of the
/var filesystem filled my 10000 line scrollback buffer with errors it found.
i'm glad i put /var on a seperate slice, otherwise i think this would trashed
my / filesystem, and that woulda sucked.
