I've been using RedHat Linux 6.2, the last to support Sparcs, on a
dual processor SS10. I'm planning to dedicate the machine to run a few
programs as a server. RedHat 6.2 is basically good enough, but I was
wondering if there are any comparisons, that could give me a way to
estimate which OS would give me the best performance with this
machine. I couldn't even find any info on how SMP performs and I
didn't see a sperate SMP distribution for NetBSD.

I started looking at NetBSD after I installed a version on an old 68K
mac, and while I had some problems, once up and running it's been
unusually solid - even for unix. Now that its becoming apparent future
RedHat development will not include Sparcs, I'm looking to see if I can
stay with a distribution that does include Sparcs. I'm planning this
machine to mostly run a proxy server (squid) and a few other
programs. I don't care about X, or any workstation software at all, as
long as I can compile and update the programs I'm running. I'd be
thrilled if I knew for certain I could pull the frame buffer and
manage it through a DEC Terminal. All I care about is server
performance.
