Ok, to answer my own question: 150ns STmicro M48T02 chips seem to have
problems in ss2 class machines. Replacing the chip with a 70ns (M48T02-70)
chip has my ss2 working just fine once programmed according to the NVRAM
faq. The 150ns (M48T02-150) variety works fine for the ss1/ss1+, though.
