If it's worth anything, I'm also getting occasional error messages
from the SCSI subsystem.

I ran NetBSD 1.4.2 for months without a single message.  No changes to
my SCSI change at all.  After moving to 1.5 I started getting them.

I have not experienced any errors in terms of losing data, and I have
worked the system hard and done so simultaneously with tape backups.

However, I'm also worried that I'm getting these messages.
