hi manuel..

you are right - dev_mkdb is not being run. running it by hand solved the 
problem of ps. however, i am unsure how it should be included in rc.conf or 
defaults/rc.conf

i tried
dev_mkdb=YES
but that had no effect so i tried 
dev_mkdb
that had the effect of shutting me out entirely after reboot. all connection 
attempts are refused. i cant get back to the console until monday. i found the 
command in the /etc/rc on my classic at home which is still running 1.4.2.

has /etc/rc become part of /etc/defaults/rc.conf in 1.5? well i'll have a 
closer look at this on monday. thanks for you help.
