Why must you set the execute bit anyway?

I assume you ran dd while Debian did not use the swap partition, i.e.
rebooted into single user mode, like boot -s, not simply shutdown now,
unless you can unconfigure swap devices in Debian.

How did you boot from the swap partition?
Did you use something like: boot sd(0,0,1)
