Thanks, Ruibiao, :))

no I haven't rebuilt the kernel with UCONSOLE option
yet. The reason being that I found that I could run xconsole
successfully without having to do it. My last problem was
that I was using "startx" script to start x up and I wasn't
running xconsole at all and so the messages would obliterate
the screen. Running xconsole manually fixed this.

It's only now I have a new problem in that I'm running xdm
and I find that I can't run xconsole from the Xsession file.

So, are you saying that rebuilding the kernel with this option
would allow me to run xconsole from Xsession? or are you
saying that I should rebuild the kernel to be able to run
xconsole at all? (because I can already run xconsole, if I
do it manually).

If it is the former and it will enable me to run xconsole from
Xsession, I'll be rapt. I'll rebuild the kernel. (after I download
20Mb of kernel sources over 28.8!:)

chow,
Paul.
