We could have the driver clear the bit for native mode (in this case there's
   no risk of conficts with another add-on board), based on a compile-time
   option. Would this be enouth ?


i think as long as it works `by default' i will be happy.  (2 disks in a U5
will be fairly common, it is a documented supported procedure...)
