pk found that some ide disks needed a particular reset (or some such) that
was not being performed.  the problem caused mounting root to fail when
the prom had touched the disk in some way (either loading boot blocks or
the kernel itself).  it only affected some disks, eg, the 4G that came with
the U5 works, but a 15G seagate i attached did not.  the same problem also
occured on some macppc models (which used the same pciide controller).
