and just today i found a good reason to buy one at work. we need a ftp server
for some stuff, nothing huge or amazing, not too much use. they had a quote
for a T1, $4,000. the X1 is far more power than we would need for such an
application, and only cost 1/4 as much. in butt-clenching corporate land, i
have just become a hero.

we are a SUN shop. the newest hardware we own that isn't sun, is 5-10 years
old. they just got on the SUN bandwagon (it's super expensive, but the service
rocks) many years ago, and don't have any plans of ever getting off.

besides, what's a 1U PC server go for? and do you get SUN quality service
with that. see, maybe this X1 isn't such a bad idea.

and that's just the work world. let's look at my home setup. i've been eyeing
up an Ultra5 to run an ActiveWorlds server on for my wife. for about the same
amount of money as i could find an Ultra5 on eBay, i can get a new machine,
without the hassle of bidding on eBay. with cheap componants (PC133 memory)
and i can mount it in my 19" rack at home far easier than i can an Ultra5.
now granted, not many people have 19" cabinets in their houses, but it's still
a very affordable solutions. i don't need 8MB eCache, sure it would be cool,
but look at the cost difference. if i truely need that class of performance,
they i would be more than happy to shell out 4x as much to get it, but i don't,
so i won't.

i've gone on long enough. especially since we have gotten way off topic with
this already as it is.
