Sanity?  Oh dear...I lose already.

Unfortunately yes.  I borrowed a drive from work last night and
that one works fine, so mine's knackered AFAIK.  Boy are they
noisy!!!!   I will check to make sure the PSU is not doing it
tonight and replace the drive/psu.  I found a company selling 1
year guaranteed ones for very little money (equiv =A325 in uk
pounds).  I'd rather have a DDS2 drive but like hell I can find
a cheap one (that works).  Even broken ones are expensive!!!

Cheers for your suggestion anyway - I have done things that
silly in the past so it is a perfect personal reflection :))
