   sparc64 subdirectory but not a sparc subdirectory any more (in
   contrast to the latest alpha). Has the 32 bit sparc support been
   dropped recently?


it hasn't been dropped.  the 1.5_BETA build for sparc hasn't been
completed yet is all.  i'm sure there will be an announcement on
this list when it is made.
