umm.. "huh?"... Unless I'm totally out to lunch, I don't think NetBSD
has _ever_ distributed 'bash' nor was anything other than 'csh' the
default root shell...

NetBSD also defaults to shadow passwords in /etc/master.passwd. 

Perhaps someone else installed your 1.4 for you? Or perhaps you're mistaking
it for linux?
