Subject: INSTALL kernels on release branch broken?

Building the 1.4 release branch from 20000127 I get INSTALL kernels that
croak on an Illegal Instruction before they get anywhere. By this I mean
that it hasn't even finished printing the numbers while it loads the kernel
and it bombs back to the OF prompt.

This happens both when booted from floppy and if I copy them to / and
boot them as alternate kernels. The miniroot works just fine however.

Sparc IPX, if it matters.

I'm planning to get a new checkout from the release branch soon; will
that fix it or has no one else noticed this?

(It is remotely possible that my cross-building hack is responsible,
but I doubt that, since the rest of the system runs great after being
built with it.)
