Doesn't look like it to me, except for making the device nodes, which
someone else mentioned.

No, you can use a full root if you like. It doesn't really matter;
whatever gets you going so that you can partition the hard drive and
unpack the sets is fine.

I'd just go for it, and keep a copy of tcpdump handy so you can see
where it runs in to trouble, if you have any.
