I'm not sure I agree.  If someone wants to fund SMP work and impose the
condition that nothing at all be said even semi-publicly until it's
ready, more power to them.

But if that's done, they can hardly bitch if the rest of the world goes
off and ignores them.

I don't think we deserve to know the status of the funded SMP work.
But I *do* think we deserve either that or a lifting of the implicit
"this is being worked on, don't duplicate effort" semi-ban on doing
publicly-visible work on it.
