I tried that and no success, but let me give you some more information.

If I drop out to a shell and try "ifconfig le0 media none", I get a message
device not configured.  The address of the card is ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff which I
am not sure is correct and finally, I cannot ping localhost either although
ifconfig reports it as being up.

You mention 1.4.1, can I download that and give it a try?  Do you think it
will help given the extra bit of information?
