If you set $DISPLAY to unix:0.0 instead of :0.0 it'll try to use a
UNIX-domain socket instead of a pipe to talk to the X server.  Then
you won't need X11-pipe.  The problem is that it's trying to apply
pipe semantics to a socket.  Symlinking .X11-pipe to .X11-unix is not
the solution.
