OK.  Problem solved--we somehow overlooked the DIP package on the board.
Setting the system to use Ethernet instead of Cheapernet and to supply
12V to the transceiver allowed the card to work.  This wasn't necessary
on the mainboard and got overlooked when the sbus card was installed.
Thanks to mcr for the pointer to this, and to others for the quick
responses.
