Ah!  Apologies - I thought you meant a parallel port scanner.  If you want
to use SANE, you need a kernel compiled without SCSI scanner (PiNT) support
but with SCSI unknown support.  The scanner should then show up as uk0, i.e.
/dev/uk0.  You should see this in your bootup messages when the SCSI devices
are probed.  I have a symlink /dev/scanner -> /dev/uk0, although you could
change hp.conf instead.  Also, you'll probably need to comment out all the
backends apart from HP in the SANE dll.conf file (I found that one of the
other backends erroneously detected my HP 4P).
