I'm not exactly sure what the problem with secure-mode ever was.  I've been
running various machines in secure-mode, including a firewall from the
NetBSD 0.9 days, and have never had a problem with it on both sun4c and
sun4m hardware in either full or command security.  Sure, you couldn't set
it from the 'eeprom' command, but if you set it in the PROM, it worked as
you would expect it to work.
