  I've just verified that this happens with a generic kernel (the 1.3.2
distribution kernel) as well as my customized one.

  I hate just whining about it; C and I get along very well, but kernal innards,
especially virtual memory systems, aren't my forte'.  Does anyone have any idea
what's going on here?
