i had klaus klein build me a kernel to determine that it wasn't some
local change that was causing the problem.  it wasn't.  his kernel
failed to run on my IPX just like mine do.

i had also built a kernel with old VM over night.  i'm currently
running this kernel -- it seems to work for me.  sure, i have some
userland lossage now, but all my applications work, including those
that use scripts.
