  You'll get the same info on a serial console as you would from a
graphical console.  Switch into diag mode and power up the
machine...eventually the diags will complete, and you'll see the
regular power-up banner that lists the ROM rev, the IDPROM sysid, and
the MAC address.

  You should be able to abort the diagnostics by hitting <esc> after
they start up...if I recall correctly, this works on the 4/400, I'm
not sure about the 4/300...but it's worth a try.
