If you have run X by itself, yes, you need to kill it. You could use xdm
(see below). If you run startx, or xinit, you can have the X session wait
on the window manager (say), so exiting the WM exits the X session.

Hmm, I have the opposite problem. That is becuase the monitor on my i386 is
fading. Are you sure it's not just the differences between the monitors?
Most monitors have pots that you can adjust if you take off the rear cover.
However :

	1) always use a plastic screwdriver as there are VERY high voltages
	   around
	2) if the tube is fading, then there may only be limited adjustment
	   left

Not sure about this. Unlike most PC cards, which have variable settings, the
sync rates, start, etc. are fixed on the sparc card (and monitor). Unless
someone else knows different, you can't change these settings.

Run xconsole (or xterm -C). That way, console messages end up in that window.
You could run xdm instead to start X sessions. Just configure it in
/etc/rc.local. You can then customise the default sessions, (e.g. so you
always have a console). If you want a sample xdm config, I can mail you my
mine, although the one supplied with X is a reasonable start.

Hmm. The X performance on my 4/330 is about the same as a 486-66 (the
processor is slightly slower, the whole machine somewhat faster). Running
X on a Sparc 4 is very nice (fast), but then I don't have a faster i386 to
compare against. Anyway the Sparc hardware is just so much nicer!
