  I found the right model number on the case, and found the jumper
settings in www.blue-planet.com. 

  It seemed to hang upon mounting root from NFS. At first, I thought
it might be link flags not being passed to the kernel, but it turned out
to be /dev/console missing (I had installed openbsd on a friend's machine
from this boot area, and it has a ramdisk). So, that is one "expert" that
found the warning useful :-)

  I got the disk labelled, and it is now booting on the Sparc. Thank you
to all who helped me out!
  Now to suck the rest of 1.3 down. Wish I had a CD :-)
