The only place 1.2 comes into the picture in my attempt is that I built
config, make, and the kernel on an SS2 running slightly-post-1.2.  I
had a 1.2 userland on the disk, true, but if a -current GENERIC kernel
is so incompatible with a 1.2 init that it can't even read the response
to the "pathname for shell" prompt, something is pretty seriously
wrong, it seems to me.
