the "didn't work" the first time because that box had securelevel=1
(which is unlike all my other boxes), and i didn't notice the error
that /dev/rsd0a got EBUSY (or whatever).
   
   OBTW, I added support for loading gzip'd kernels while I was there.
   Useful for floppies :-)
