Exactly what you describe is present in both 1.1 and 1.2 on the sun3.
(Feel free to take what you find useful! 8^)

The sun3 RAMDISK takes only 256KB!  Whole kernel is < 1MB.
(Of course, SPARC binaries will be a little larger.)
