One similar program is distributed with X11R6. It is known as sessreg and is
somewhat more standard. It handles both utmp and wtmp file entries, and as the
man page suggests, it works well when one puts it in the Xstartup/Xreset or
GiveConsole/TakeConsole scripts.

I occasionally find myself guilty of reinventing the wheel, but a quick check
through the man pages usually saves much aggravation.
