On a SS1+, I had to connect the ttya port's DTR output to the CTS and DCD
inputs to prevent the hang.  It seems that the port is always expecting
to see the hardware handshake lines in their active state.  I don't have
a terminal connected to the port unless something goes wrong, so the
handshake signals are passive without the hardware kludge.
