Did you build the /dev directory?  This looks like that problem.
(cd /dev ; ./MAKEDEV all)

But... I have a problem with my Sun4/110 and the new kernels. 
Basically when booting from disk, init dies with a signal 11. 
I don't see this if I boot the same kernel from the net.  So.. it
might be related to that.
