As far as I can tell, when support for the 4/{1,2,3}00 was added, the 
dependency on open-mode went away.  You can certainly boot a sun4 from 
the old monitor (I boot my 4/260 from it all the time :-), and I think I 
even tried booting an ss1 from the old-style command prompt and succeeded 
... been a while; I could be mistaken.
