I think this stems from:

	a) an NCR 5380 driver that leavs a bit to be desired
	b) the fact that that tape drive is a QIC-24 or 36 behind
	   an Emulex MT02.  (I know that because I've seen your
	   dmesg output :-)

It's worth noting that before mine went completely on the fritz, I had 
this problem, too.  Mine didn't even work under SunOS, tho.

I'm not entirely sure what to do about that problem, and I'm probably not 
going to have the time to look at it any time soon, either.  (*sigh*  I 
wish there were more hours in the day and coffee was cheaper....)
