this has been mentioned before, but apparently it's been forgotten.

i have already rewritten the driver from the ground up.

it isn't in the tree because i haven't been re-given access to commit
it. (many others have been given commit access since i wrote it and
asked to be given access back -- and as far as i know they haven't had
to make any `promises' that i haven't already made.)
