Yep. I get this too. internal SCSI and external both SEAGATE.

df/cd/ls hang on external drive references, but root (using other drive)
can login fine and halt the system. sync works ok, fsck works ok.

I've also assumed it was sickdisk and just been rebooting. 

no debug in kernel.
